MiraCosta College is independently wealthy, justly proud of its classroom prowess and looking to grow.

Bilbray better run, not walk, this time: The general election begins one, not two, months from now. For early-bird mail-in voters, balloting starts Oct. 6, almost a full month before the polls close and the nation holds its breath as the results from old and new battleground states – Ohio and Michigan; Colorado and Virginia – come in.

Labor Day has wobbly history in San Diego: This Labor Day, San Diego's 117th annual work stoppage, the politically traded stock of labor appears to be ticking up as the economy dives into recession.

Snail-mail strategy is roadblock for public: A brick – the Wrong Write Stuff award – to the U.S. Department of Commerce for wasting stamps and killing trees by forcing prospective speakers at a Sept. 22 hearing in Del Mar to mail in their requests to speak.

Neglect squeezing life out of city park: I've worked out of Escondido for more than 20 years and, to be brutally honest, Grape Day Park has been a lovely eyesore the whole time.

Native son has bright idea for Coronado bridge: Almost 41 years ago, nine months after construction had begun on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, Patrick McInerney was born in the Coronado Hospital, a short walk from the bridge's foot.

Solution to pot smoke at concerts: lame bands: Stoners at Del Mar; nudists at San Onofre. Do they have de facto rights to party?

Candidate wears her difference with pride: On Nov. 4, Evan Delaney Rodgers, who turns 19 on Sunday, will cast an official ballot for the first time in her life.

High-volume discord's 'domestic violence' label: As a reader hired to ride herd on North County, I was drawn to a stray headline last week: “Oceanside has highest domestic violence rate.”

One town's sense of civic duty in a coma: A brick – the Civic Sleeping Sickness award – to the citizens of Solana Beach for failing to inspire so much as one – one – challenger to run against the three City Council incumbents seeking re-election in November.

Chicken challenges Bilbray on debates: On Tuesday, a nearly 6-foot-tall chicken delivered the following letter to the Solana Beach office of Rep. Brian Bilbray, the Republican congressman running for re-election:

Wife's injury a little too urgent for urgent care: If your stomach is settled, picture this: I'm driving with a cell phone shrugged into one ear, an open address book on my lap, and my wife in the passenger seat with her left leg sticking straight up to the car's roof.

Carlsbad candidate has come long way: The winter day the shah fled Iran, Farrah Douglas was trapped in gridlocked traffic with her American husband, Rick, and their 2-year-old son, Kevin.

Bond's assurance unable to hold water: Almost a month ago, I talked to James Bond about the Encinitas City Council race. For several months, the four-term councilman had been humming bars from his swan song.

Water project that won't be aids park that will: Toilet-to-tap's ghost town is the god-sent refuge for the Witch's largest burn victim.

Two build an escape route for Horn to use: A pair of bouquets – the Surgical Strikes award – to Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Pam Slater-Price for dressing the wounds Wednesday after dozens of Valley Center residents had finished blasting their supervisor, Bill Horn.

A pardon for 'Duke'? Don't make us all puke: Over the weekend, a national news story caught North County's fading black eye – and poked it again.

Cash or kids? What's the TIP drama really about?: It's all about the kids. Whenever I hear that bromide from an educator, I take it as a tell that it's not about the kids. It's about the money.

Mayor tries to stifle colleague, wins brick: A brick – the Where's Your Muzzle? award – to Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood for losing his cool while trying to put a sock in Councilman Rocky Chavez during last week's testy debate about the sale of city-owned land under the Marina Towers condominiums.

Encinitas has best of races in N. County: I'm a racist. It's politically incorrect to say it, but some races are obviously superior to others.
