SDSU women's soccer

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 27, 2008
Coach: Mike Friesen

Career Record: Second year, 9-8-3

2007 Team Record: 9-8-3, 4-2-1, second, Mountain West Conference

Returning Starters/Letter-winners: 7/17

NCAA Tournament Appearances/Last: 2/1999

Team Outlook: The Aztecs get a boost with the return of co-captain Cat Walker, a sophomore midfielder who missed last season with an ACL injury. Further midfield strength comes from junior Ali Lokanc (Patrick Henry High), who played her first two seasons at Nebraska. Junior co-captain Millie Allen should help lead the defense once she returns from an early-season knee injury. Junior Allie Crowson also anchors the unit ahead of sophomore goalkeeper Aubree Southwick, who set a school record with 106 saves last season. Spearheading the attack are junior Heather Vandevanter, fifth-year senior Alicia Piz and junior Jessica Gordon, back in top shape after missing much of last season. Freshman defenders Megan McQueeny and Gretel Amman have been pressed into key roles.

Conference outlook: The strong favorite is Brigham Young, the defending conference tournament champion. SDSU looks to contend, along with UNLV and Utah.
