Aztecs men's soccer

UNION-TRIBUNE

September 3, 2008

SDSU coach: Lev Kirshner

Career record: 56-72-26 (ninth year)

2007 team record: 8-7-4, 4-4-2, tied for second, Pac-10

Returning starters/lettermen: 10/11

NCAA appearances/Last: 8/2006

Team outlook: The Aztecs enter their fourth season in the Pac-10, missing only one starter from last season's lineup. Senior co-captains Danny Ortiz and Dennis Sanchez anchor the defense for the third year with standout Nick Cardenas and Steve Beitashour. That unit eases some concern at goalkeeper with sophomore Brad Byrns still recovering from a broken elbow. Sophomore Khadim Diouf is the top returning scorer, and junior midfielders Evan Toft and Jamel Wallace (Oceanside High) should add offensive force.

Conference outlook: Two-time defending champion Cal is the favorite with perennial power UCLA challenging. The Aztecs also look to contend and secure an NCAA tournament bid.
