BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles recalled Radames Liz from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday and immediately placed him in the starting rotation, hopeful the right-hander benefited from a three-week stay in the minor leagues.

Liz started Friday night's game against the New York Yankees. He was 4-3 with a 7.47 ERA in 10 starts with the Orioles before being optioned to Norfolk on July 27.

While with the Tides, Liz went 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA in four starts.

“He went down there and did a real nice job. I'll be anxious to watch him pitch tonight,” Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. “They said the command of his pitches was much better, the location of his pitches was much better.”

During his earlier stay, Liz lasted six innings in only two of 10 starts. In his final appearance, he allowed six runs in 5 2-3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels and missed the strike zone with 46 of 102 pitches.

“Up here I thought he was too much of a high-ball pitcher and paid the price for it,” Trembley said. “He went down there and got some good work in and put some good numbers up and had a chance to come up here.”

Trembley said Liz would next pitch Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox. First, however, Liz had to get by New York.

“If you are going to start back again, you might as well start against a team that has the kind of lineup that the Yankees do,” Trembley said. “We'll find out right away.”

The early returns were not good. The first three Yankees to face Liz got hits, but a double-play ball by Alex Rodriguez and a strikeout by Jason Giambi limited the damage in the first inning to one run.

The demotion of Liz late last month launched an overhaul of the starting rotation. Brian Burres was optioned to Norfolk on Aug. 1, Dennis Sarfate was sent back to the bullpen after an ineffective run as a starter, and Garrett Olson was optioned to Norfolk on Wednesday.

Burres is expected to be recalled Tuesday to face the White Sox.
