Pirates activate Mientkiewicz, plan other moves

MILWAUKEE – The Pittsburgh Pirates activated Doug Mientkiewicz from the bereavement list before Friday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

To make room on the roster, the Pirates optioned Steve Pearce to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mientkiewicz was placed on the bereavement list Monday to be with his wife, Jodi, for her pacemaker procedure. She returned home to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Mientkiewicz, who was not in the starting lineup against the Brewers, came into the game batting .285 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 98 games. Pearce hit .224 with no homers and seven RBIs in 20 games with Pittsburgh.

The Pirates also announced that left-hander Tom Gorzelanny and right-hander Matt Capps would rejoin the team Saturday.

Gorzelanny will be recalled from Indianapolis and start against the Brewers' Jeff Suppan. Capps will be reinstated from the 15-day disabled list after missing more than six weeks with right shoulder bursitis.

No corresponding roster moves were announced.

Gorzelanny was optioned to Triple-A on July 5, a day after he gave up five runs in the fifth inning of a 9-1 loss to the Brewers. He went 6-7 with a 6.57 ERA in 17 games with Pittsburgh this season.

Jeff Karstens, scheduled to start Saturday, will now start Monday. Paul Maholm will go Sunday.

Capps was 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 17 saves before being placed on the DL on July 2. In his absence, the team has gone to a closer by committee, with seven different Pirates recording saves this season.
