Union-Tribune All-San Diego Section basketball team

UNION-TRIBUNE

March 22, 2008

BOYS FIRST TEAM

Troy Leaf

Foothills Christian

Sophomore, 6-3, 25.1 ppg

Leaf led his team in scoring. As one of the taller Knights, he also was among the team's top rebounders. Leaf, who has accepted a scholarship offer to San Diego State, led Foothills Christian to its second straight section Division V title.

Patrick McCollom

San Diego

Senior, 6-3, 17.7 ppg

Transferring from Washington state helped McCollom and the Cavers as the flashy guard led San Diego to its first section title since 1975. McCollom's ball-handling and unselfish passing allowed San Diego to reach the regional quarterfinals.

James Rahon

Torrey Pines

Senior, 6-2, 25.6 ppg

Santa Clara University is getting the best pure shooter in the section. Rahon was able to create and score against double-and triple-teams. He showed outstanding ball-handling skills in leading the Falcons to a 22-7 record against a tough schedule.

Nelson Rosario

El Camino

Senior, 6-6, 11.8 ppg

The multisport standout lists basketball as his third-favorite, but many believe Rosario's scoring, rebounding and defense are good enough for him to play hoops at UCLA, where he's accepted a football scholarship and plans to compete in track.

Jeremy Tyler

San Diego

Sophomore, 6-11, 18.7 ppg

Last year's Newcomer of the Year dominated inside with double-figure averages in scoring and rebounds. Tyler matured as the season progressed and was a big reason the Cavers were unbeaten against San Diego Section teams.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Angelo Chol

Hoover

Freshman, 6-8, 10.6 ppg

Although much was expected of the big freshman, few anticipated that he'd dominate down the stretch in leading Hoover to the section Division II title. Chol was credited with 9.9 rebounds and 7.2 blocks per game.

BOYS SECOND TEAM

Tayler Darby

Mission Hills

Senior, 6-8, 20.3 ppg

Shawn Hempsey

La Costa Canyon

Senior, 6-2 18.8 ppg

GIRLS FIRST TEAM

Danielle Boykin

Bonita Vista

Senior, 5-10, 18.8 ppg

Bonita Vista quietly became a power as the season progressed, leading for almost the entire section Division I title game before falling to Poway. Boykin's powerful inside presence helped the Barons to a 22-8 record.

Dominique Conners

La Jolla Country Day

Senior, 5-9, 14.1 ppg

Many expect Conners to step in and start at USD because her game is so polished. Conners was the motor for the Torreys, pushing the ball up the court, driving to the basket and finding open teammates for easy baskets.

Victoria Lippert

Cathedral Catholic

Junior, 5-11, 18.6 ppg

One of the best pure shooters around, Lippert displayed rebounding and ball-handling skills in leading the Dons to the section Division III title. Lippert has the ability to dominate games for long periods of time.

Gizelle Studevent

Bishop's

Junior, 5-11, 18.5 ppg

Studevent was a solidifying force for the Knights, who overcame injuries to reach the section Division IV championship game. A tenacious defender and team leader, Studevent was the top scorer and rebounder for Bishop's.

Danesia Williamson

Mount Miguel

Junior, 5-6, 20.2 ppg

Mount Miguel continues to be a power thanks to players like Williamson, a prolific scorer with inside moves and an outside jumper. She led the team in steals and was a major contributor in assists and rebounds.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR:

Katie Kuklok

Poway

Freshman, 5-8, 9.6

Kuklok was a powerful force for the Titans, who captured the section Division I title with their win over Bonita Vista. Kuklok averaged 18.3 points over the final six games, including a season-high 27 in the quarterfinals against La Costa Canyon.
